The first Australian Open has been won by the world’s best golfer, and it was won by a man who was born in Australia.
What a difference a decade makes.
The best-selling book on the sport, by Australian golfer Rory McIlroy, is now outselling its author, the former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, as a best-seller.
A year after McIloy became the first man to win a major, the book has been selling in its million-seller milestone for five consecutive months.
McIlroy has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide.
“If I was to ask for the most popular book, it would be Rory McDavid’s book,” McIlroys bookseller and author Stephen Foulds told News Corp. “The biggest bookseller of all time, Rory McNeil, has sold an astonishing 25 million copies.
The book has also become a cult favourite and the new book, Rory and the Ashes, will be out in May 2018.”
McIloy’s win on Friday came despite being a year after the tournament had been postponed in 2018, citing a lack of funds and weather conditions.
It was the first time the tournament was held in Australia since the mid-2000s and the first Australian major since 2008.
McDavid won in the men’s final by a stunning seven strokes to claim his first career Masters title.
“He was the best golver in the world for most of the year and we saw a player who was so young and was so good,” McDavid said afterwards.
“He’s one of the best players I’ve ever seen in my life.
I had so much respect for him.
I’ll never forget it.”
McDavid was on course to repeat the feat on Saturday but missed a late penalty.
“I’ve played so many great games on the tour, but he was on a completely different level to the rest of the field,” said McIlio.
“It was a great feeling to come back here and win.”
The next Australian Open will be played in Brisbane in 2019.
